Scoliosis and Pregnancy
Our co-executive director, Martha, given her public status, often gets asked about her journey with scoliosis, particularly regarding her pregnancy. While questions about what to expect with scoliosis and pregnancy with regards to epidurals, complications during birth, etc., are common, the growth of research in this area is limited, as seen below showing the frequency of publications over time for the general topic of “spine surgery” versus “scoliosis and pregnancy.”

While the number of research publications on scoliosis and pregnancy (found on PubMed) has increased in recent years, the trend does not mirror the trend in increased publications for spine surgery overall, and represents only a small fraction of the overall research on spine surgery.
To investigate this further, Enuval is reaching out to our contributors to gauge what research questions about pregnancy and scoliosis they want answered. Many of our contributors have scoliosis and have been pregnant or are considering pregnancy, and are therefore experts on their own experiences and what they want to know about their bodies and their health. Semi-structured interviews with our contributors will form the basis of Enuval’s next research project on pregnancy and scoliosis.
